1. To Strengthen Your Muscles

The surfer spends on average 85% of his session paddling to get through the impact zone and get back to the line-up.

Paddling strengthens the arms, upper body and chest, building up muscles and core strength. When finding your balance on the board it works the muscles in the back and the abdominal area. Once you pop-up and transit to a standing position; it strengthen the lower part of your body and legs.

Despite short but intense efforts, surfing is an endurance sport. Going to the peak, through the impact zone, fighting against the current, positioning yourself well to take waves, so many obstacles that require a lot of effort! To improve, you must be tenacious and have the determination to keep trying, again and again after a fall or a set of waves push you back. You have to show courage, face your fears and push your limits to surf bigger waves and try more radical manoeuvres.

In addition to all the considerable effort, surfers learn to manage their emotions, to remain calm in any situation in order to hold their breath as long as possible in case of wipeout (fall).

Like many physical activities, surfing encourages the production of endorphins, which gives you a great feeling of inner well-being and lightness. Surfing between noon and two, before or after work... will distract you from your daily routine, as well as helping to relieve stress, and make you perceive life's obstacles positively. You will be more relaxed, you will fall asleep more easily and your sleep will be deeper.

You will be able to develop a good knowledge of how the different spots in your area handle the ever-changing swells and winds. You will know where to go depending on the conditions, after you learn to read the forecast.

The ocean and its beaches are beautiful environments that can really contribute to the release of stress and tension in the body. Exposure to the sun and the sea air have a positive impact on your mood and sleep quality. Walking barefoot on sand, for example, massages the entire arch of the foot and brings relaxation and a feeling of well-being. During surfing and bodyboarding, the movement and backwash of the waves have a subconscious relaxing effect on the body, as well as strengthening muscles.

The oligos elements, minerals and negative ions present in sea water, help protect against many ENT infections and virus’, such as colds, by clearing the respiratory tract and nourishing the skin.

In some countries, surfing is even prescribed by doctors to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, overweight, stress and depression!
